We have a new F1 champion and he goes by the name Sebastian Vettel – a young German who has made the step from pretender to number one and looks set to be one of the dominant forces in the sport for years to come.
Admittedly, Vettel has been well looked after at Red Bull and they have favoured him over teammate Mark Webber this year, but we can’t take anything anyway from his performance this season, and particularly Sunday’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix where he was masterful.
I thought Fernando Alonso had the title sewn up and that it would be a walk in the park for him on Sunday but his cracked under the pressure, as did Webber, and Vettel took the initiative.
He led from the first corner and despite an initial attack from McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton, he never looked like relinquishing his grip on the race.
And to be fair, he deserved the title. Vettel has been on pole so often this season and he has shown signs of the quality he possesses throughout the campaign that I feel the title has landed in the right hands.
I would have loved to have seen Webber or Hamilton take it but Vettel is good enough in my eyes. His performance over the weekend was sensational and he looked so confident throughout. He looked and acted like a world champion.
And this caps a terrific season for his team who last weekend won the constructors’ championship. They also had Webber finishing third overall.
I felt a little sorry for Hamilton. He made such a good fist of his challenge and finished second in a race that many expected him to struggle. His car has been miles behind in terms of performance all season and yet he finished just 16 points off top spot.
Hamilton’s class is undoubted and this season has proved that if he can get a car that can compete with the top teams then he will be competing for the title every year.
After the excitement and drama of the 2010 season I can’t wait for the 2011 season to begin. Roll on next year!
