Vettel's Record Hopes Go Bang

Double world champion Sebastian Vettel saw his hopes of the record of race victories in a season go bang – quite literally – in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, as his rear right wheel suffered a puncture on just the second corner of the race.

The puncture caused sufficient enough damage to force the Red Bull driver to retire from the Grand Prix, his first non-finish in over a year, the last coming at the 2010 Korean Grand Prix.

Having qualified on pole position, the scene was set for Vettel to rack up his 12th victory of the season, and he got off the line fastest, beating Lewis Hamilton into the first turn, only for all his hard work to go up in smoke by the time he entered the second.

The German admitted he felt “hurt” after having to pull out of the race, with “nothing we could have done better all weekend. We just need to look at what caused the puncture,” he said. “I had a good start and was happy up until that point. To lose the race that early on hurts a lot.”

Vettel was in pursuit of compatriot Michael Schumacher and his record of 13 race victories in a single season, with just one race left, the Brazilian Grand Prix in ten days time.

Red Bull boss Christian Horner said that he didn’t know what had caused the puncture that brought an end to Vettel’s ambitions, other than “an instantaneous loss of pressure in turn two.”

Vettel Wins Inaugural Indian GP

It almost doesn’t need saying who won this weekend’s Indian Grand Prix, but for those who want to hear anyway, it was Sebastian Vettel who led the pack across the line in relative ease around the New Delhi circuit.

It was another straightforward victory for the Red Bull man, who took his 11th victory of the season, as well as pole position and the fastest lap in another dominant display, with Jenson Button finishing second and Fernando Alonso third. Red Bull teammate Mark Webber finished fourth.

Button, the only man who looks capable of battling with the new back-to-back champion, fought his way to second having started fourth, but the McLaren man made his move early, passing Alonso into the first corner. The battle between Button and Webber didn’t last long; as Button smoothly went by the Red Bull on the long back straight section of the track, taking his tenth podium finish of the season.

Webber looked set for third but lost out during the second round of stops, while Lewis Hamilton was also in contention until a crash involving his McLaren and the Ferrari of Felipe Massa forced him into a seventh placed finish. Hamilton had already been penalised three grid places having ignored yellow flags in practice, and he lost a position to Massa off the line.

When the chance came for Hamilton to overtake the Brazilian, the two made contact with officials placing the blame on Massa, who Hamilton said “turned in on me giving me no space,” with Massa having to take a drive-through penalty before he retired with broken suspension.

Michael Schumacher finished fifth ahead of teammate Nico Rosberg, while Adrian Sutil gave the home crowd something to cheer, with the Indian driver finishing ninth.

Organisers in New Jersey are set to release details of a proposed street race for the 2013 Formula One season, meaning that the United States could be hosting two races.

The sport hasn’t been to the US since the Indianapolis Grand Prix in 2007, but the country will return to the calendar in 2012 with the new Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, becoming yet another new venue for the teams to visit after New Delhi hosts its inaugural Grand Prix at the weekend.

With the sports’ investors looking to re-establish a position in the United States, a second Grand Prix is likely to capture the imagination of a motorsport-crazed nation, helping to promote the sport around the world.

The new circuit in New Jersey, expected to run along the banks of the Hudson River and within site of the Manhattan skyline, is predicted to take place in June and meets the long-term goals of F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone, who has wanted a race in New York for a long time.

The street circuit will be similar to that in Monte Carlo at the Monaco Grand Prix, with drivers racing through the usually congested streets, with solid plans to be unveiled imminently.

More criticism for Hamilton

Having gone a few races without being the centre of attention regarding a bizarre act on the track, Lewis Hamilton is again the focus of intense media scrutiny following his collision with Felipe Massa in last weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix.

The McLaren driver was penalised by race officials for the incident in which he turned into Massa when fighting for seventh position, breaking part of his own front wing and puncturing the rear tyre of the Ferrari. Hamilton received a drive-through penalty for his part in the incident, but still recovered to finish fifth, while Massa came home in ninth. After the race, Massa approached Hamilton who was being interviewed, tapping him on the shoulder, which prompted a response of “don’t touch me man” from the 2008 world champion.

Massa was highly critical of Hamilton, who has been involved in a number of incidents throughout the season – including two incidents in this year’s Monaco Grand Prix with the Brazilian – saying that he “cannot use his mind” and that he’s dangerous to be around on the track. The British driver has had a number of run-ins with stewards, officials and other drivers throughout what has been a difficult season on the track for the McLaren team, with their closest rivals running away with the constructors’ and drivers’ titles once again.

Sebastian Vettel of the Red Bull Racing team is just one point away from sealing back-to-back championships having won his ninth race of the season at the Marina Bay circuit.

So while the focus has been on Hamilton “losing the plot” again, the driver’s father, Anthony, told the BBC that his son “needs more support from his management team.” Anthony Hamilton said that this hasn’t been the best of years for Lewis but he’ll be back next year, where he will need more support from his management team, something that is obviously there for other drivers with their managers.

McLaren Hoping To Tame Red Bull

Having shown a timely return to form in recent weeks that have left Red Bull arguing amongst themselves over improvements, McLaren are hoping that they can keep the pressure on and reel in the current championship leaders at this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix.

Having won the last two races, with one apiece for Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton, the gap to drivers’ championship leader Sebastian Vettel, while still substantial, is down to just 88 points from Hamilton, and 100 from Button, who took the chequered flag last time out at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Red Bull won six of the first eight races of the season, with Vettel claiming six, as they established a seemingly unstoppable charge for the title, but McLaren’s recent improvements have left fans wondering if the impossible could become possible.

Jenson Button certainly feels it is, saying that the team’s main aim for the rest of the season is “to put the pressure on the frontrunners, particularly Red Bull. The car definitely feels more driveable right now.”

Team mate Hamilton added, “I just can’t wait to get back out in my car. We’ve worked so hard to improve the set-up, so it’s really inspiring confidence at the moment which means you can push that little but harder, particularly in qualifying.”

By Chris White

Having taken over the Minardi team in 2005, Red Bull Racing decided to add a second team to the grid for the development of their drivers, Scuderia Toro Rosso, or STR as they are commonly known have been competing in the Formula One world championship since the beginning of the 2006 season.

The team debuted in the Bahrain Grand Prix of that year, the opening race, and finished in 15th and 16th places, with Vitantonio Liuzzi and Scott Speed at the wheel. It was Liuzzi who scored the team’s first points, taking 8th place at the United States Grand Prix, while they had to wait until 2008 for their first pole position, podium finish and race victory. All of which came in one race, with Sebastian Vettel taking the honours at the Italian Grand Prix.

The team started out using Cosworth engines having bought out Minardi who had a contract with the manufacturer, before making the move to Ferrari in 2007. This deal took over from the contract in place with the Red Bull Racing team, who broke away to use Renault engines.

Having suffered with a number of reliability issues and several driver errors, 2007 turned out to be a poor year for Toro Rosso. These problems culminated in Speed being dropped and replaced by Vettel, who was a development driver at BMW Sauber at the time.

The German subsequently finished fourth and Liuzzi sixth in the Chinese Grand Prix, the team’s best results to that date.

In 2008, Liuzzi was replaced by Sebastian Bourdais, who earned his first points in F1 at the Australian Grand Prix, finishing in seventh place. It wasn’t until Monaco that Vettel scored his first points of the season, finishing fifth as the team began to show real signs of improvement. Vettel secured the first Italian-based-non-Ferrari team victory since Juan Manuel Fangio won for Maserati at the 1957 German Grand Prix, and the pair began running with the big boys consistently for the remainder of the season – earning Vettel a deal with the Red Bull team in 2009.

Sebastian Buemi took up Vettel’s spot for 2009, and Bourdais was dropped in favour of Jaime Alguersuari at the summer break, but the Spaniard only managed three finishes in his eight races. Toro Rosso subsequently finished in tenth place in the drivers’ championship after Buemi scored points in the final two races of the year.

In 2010, the pair finished tenth in the constructors’ championship, without really setting the world alight, Buemi having a best finish of ninth in Canada, while Alguersuari peaked in ninth at Malaysia and Abu Dhabi.

So far in 2011, the team have showed much better consistency, with three retirements between the pair in the eleven races, leaving the team eighth in the constructors’ championship.

By Chris White

Vettel Starting To Feel The Pressure

Having had such a strong start to the season, with many feeling the drivers’ championship was wrapped up before the halfway stage in the campaign, Sebastian Vettel is starting to show signs that he is feeling the pressure, after failing to win any of the last three races as his challengers close the gap.

Vettel made a well-publicised request for improvements to be made to Red Bull team boss Christian Horner after the Hungarian Grand Prix, but Horner fought off his request, telling the German that “the drivers don’t need to tell the team we need to respond.”

The improvements made in recent races by Ferrari – who won at Silverstone – and McLaren – who have taken the last two races – have certainly reopened what was looking like a procession for 2010 champion Vettel, who had won six of the first eight races until the championship arrived in Britain.

Vettel still leads the drivers’ championship by 83-points, so it is not crisis time by any means, but with the other teams improving Red Bull could certainly do with a win soon to get back on track. While Vettel has been calling for improvements to be made to the car, Horner has ruled that out, stating that “nothing changes in our philosophy”, and that they will keep attacking every grand prix for the rest of the season to ensure victory in both the drivers’ and constructors’ championship – of which Red Bull are 103-points clear at the summer break.

The calls from Vettel will give his rivals a real boost for the rest of the season, as it shows the championship leader is starting to worry about the challenge coming up behind him. Fernando Alonso, who won at Silverstone to start the fresh challenge, is looking very quick at present and regularly performs well at the next two circuits – Spa and the home of Ferrari, Monza – while Lewis Hamilton and team mate Jenson Button, who won in Germany and Hungary respectively are right back in the title race.

By Chris White
